Few calls ruin a fleet manager's day like a driver saying the truck will not go above crawling speed. The engine has derated, the load is stuck on the highway and nobody is sure whether it is safe to keep going. On BS-VI trucks, derate is not random. It is the engine control unit protecting either the engine or the emission system, and it almost always gives clear warnings first, often hours or days before power drops. This guide covers the main causes, the right driver and workshop steps, and how fleets catch derate warnings early in HVI.
BS-VI Truck Engine Derate and Limp Mode: Causes and Fixes
Find out why your truck lost power, what the driver should do in the next five minutes and how your workshop can stop the same derate from coming back.
Emission derate
The engine cuts power because the after-treatment system is not cleaning exhaust properly, for example low DEF or a failed NOx sensor.
Usually warns for hours or days firstProtection derate
The engine cuts power to save itself from damage, for example overheating or low oil pressure.
Can come on within minutesThe Derate Cause Map
Most BS-VI derates fall into five families. Knowing the family tells the driver how urgent it is and tells the workshop where to start.
After-treatment
Most common- DEF level low or empty
- Poor DEF quality
- Low SCR efficiency
- High DPF soot load
- NOx sensor faults
Engine protection
Urgent- Coolant temperature high
- Oil pressure low
- Intake air temperature high
- Exhaust temperature too high
Sensors and wiring
Common- Boost pressure sensor
- Fuel rail pressure sensor
- Chafed harness or loose connector
- Network communication faults
Fuel and air
Common- Water in fuel
- Clogged fuel filters
- Blocked air filter
- Boost leaks in intake pipes
Tamper detection
Avoidable- DEF system disconnected
- Emulator or bypass device fitted
- Unauthorised software changes
Driver Decision Path: The First Five Minutes
Read each question from top to bottom. Stop at the first one where the answer is yes and follow that action.
How Workshops Should Diagnose a Derate
Replacing parts by guesswork is the most expensive way to fix a derate. This order finds the real cause faster.
Read all codes
Note active and previously active codes, with occurrence counts.
Check freeze frame data
See speed, load and temperature at the moment the fault set.
Check fluids first
DEF level and quality, coolant, oil and fuel water separator.
Inspect wiring
Connectors, grounds and harness routing near hot or moving parts.
Test the suspect part
Use OEM procedures to test sensors and actuators before replacing.
Clear, then road test
Clear codes only after the fix, then confirm on a real road test.
Hear About the Warning Before the Derate
HVI lets drivers report warning lamps with a photo and links fault codes to each truck, so your team can act while the truck still has full power.
Can You Just Reset a Derate?
Resetting is the most common shortcut, and the most common reason the same truck derates again a few days later.
What a reset does
Clears stored codes and may restore power for a while if the cause has already been fixed.
What it does not do
It does not fix low DEF, a bad sensor or a clogged filter. The engine will detect the fault again and derate again.
When it is right
After the cause is repaired and recorded, as the last step before a road test.
Emulators and bypass devices that hide derate break emission rules and can void warranty. They are never a fix.
Derate Patterns by Vehicle Type
Different jobs trigger different derates. Use this to focus driver training and preventive checks.
| Vehicle type | Most common trigger | Best prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Tippers | DPF soot load from short runs and idling, overheating on loaded climbs | Limit idling, complete regens, clean radiators often |
| City buses | DPF and SCR faults from stop-go low-heat running | Schedule parked regens, watch NOx sensor health |
| Long-haul trucks | DEF running out or poor-quality DEF from roadside sources | Plan DEF stops, buy sealed stock, check quality |
| Excavators and loaders | Overheating in dust and heat, after-treatment faults on newer machines | Daily radiator and air filter checks, reduce idle time |

Engine Derate FAQs
What is engine derate or limp mode?
Derate, also called limp mode, is when the engine control unit deliberately reduces power or speed. It does this to protect the engine from damage or to force a fix of an emission fault. The truck can usually still move, but slowly, so the driver can reach a safe place.
Why is my BS-VI truck limited to around 20 km/h?
A very low speed limit is usually the final stage of an emission derate, often after DEF has run out or an after-treatment fault has been ignored for a long time. The exact limit depends on the manufacturer. The fault must be fixed and cleared by a workshop before full speed returns.
Is it safe to keep driving in derate?
For an emission derate with no red lamp, it is usually safe to drive slowly to a safe place or workshop. For a protection derate caused by overheating or low oil pressure, continuing can wreck the engine, so stop as soon as it is safe. Drivers who report the lamp in HVI get a quicker decision from the supervisor.
Why does derate come back after the workshop clears it?
Because the cause was not fixed, only the codes were cleared. Bad DEF left in the tank, a loose connector or a failing sensor will set the same fault again. Keeping a history of each derate on the same truck makes repeat causes much easier to spot.
How can a fleet reduce derate events?
Train drivers to report amber lamps the same day, buy and store DEF correctly, cut idling and keep cooling systems clean. Then track every warning and derate by vehicle so patterns show up. Book a demo to see derate tracking in HVI.
Fewer Derates, Fewer Tows, Fewer Late Deliveries
Give drivers a fast way to report warnings, give supervisors a clear decision path and give your workshop the history it needs to fix the real cause the first time.
