Scissor lifts make work at height faster and safer than ladders or scaffolding, which is why they are now common in factories, malls, airports and building projects across India. But a lift with a broken gate, a faulty tilt alarm or a weak emergency lowering system can turn a routine job into a fall or a tip-over. Many lifts are rented or shared between crews, so nobody may know its condition unless it is checked. A short daily inspection before use catches these faults early. This checklist covers it, and shows how firms block unsafe lifts in HVI.
Scissor Lift Daily Inspection Checklist for Work at Height
Platform and guardrails, gate, controls, emergency lowering, tilt and overload alarms, pothole guards, batteries, tyres and hydraulics.
The Daily Pre-Use Checklist
Do the first set with the platform fully lowered, then test every function before anyone works at height.
- Guardrails and toe boards secure
- Entry gate closes and latches
- Scissor arms, pins and welds undamaged
- No hydraulic oil leaks
- Tyres and wheels in good condition
- Battery charged, cables and terminals sound
- Capacity plate and manual on board
- Ground and platform controls both work
- Emergency stops cut all movement
- Emergency lowering works
- Tilt alarm sounds when tested
- Pothole guards deploy when raised
- Drive, steer and brakes work
- Horn and motion alarm working
Safety Devices to Test
These devices protect the person on the platform. Test them, do not just look at them. Follow the maker's procedure.
| Device | How to check | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency stop | Press at ground and platform controls | Do not use |
| Emergency lowering | Operate as the maker instructs | Do not use |
| Tilt alarm | Test as the maker instructs | Do not use |
| Overload sensor | Check display and warning work | Do not use |
| Pothole guards | Watch them deploy when raised | Do not use |
| Motion alarm | Listen during drive and lift | Repair before next shift |
Check the Work Area Too
A sound lift can still tip or trap someone if the work area is not right.
Ground
Firm and level, with no holes or drop-offs.
Overhead
Clear of beams, ducts and power lines.
Wind
Outdoor use only within the maker's limit.
People nearby
Barricade the area below the platform.
Block Unsafe Lifts Before Anyone Goes Up
HVI gives operators this checklist on their phone, records defects with photos and marks any lift that fails as blocked, so rental firms and contractors know which lifts are safe to use.
Battery Care for Electric Lifts
Many indoor scissor lifts run on batteries. Good charging habits prevent lifts dying mid-job.
Charge daily
Charge after each shift as the maker advises.
Ventilate
Charge in a well-ventilated area.
Check water
Top up wet batteries as instructed.
Clean terminals
Keep terminals clean and tight.
Never exceed the platform capacity, never climb or stand on the guardrails, and keep the gate closed while working. Do not drive with the platform raised on slopes or uneven ground, and wear fall protection where your site rules require it.
Scissor Lift Status in HVI
A sample view across a contractor's or rental firm's lifts.
| Lift | Site | Daily check | Defect | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SL-04 | Mall fit-out | Passed | None | In use |
| SL-09 | Airport terminal | Passed | Motion alarm faint | Repair this week |
| SL-12 | Factory roof works | Failed | Gate latch broken | Blocked |
Scissor Lift Inspection FAQs
What should be checked on a scissor lift every day?
Guardrails, gate, scissor arms, hydraulics, tyres and battery with the platform lowered, then the controls, emergency stops, emergency lowering, tilt alarm, pothole guards, drive and brakes.
Why is the emergency lowering system important?
If power or controls fail with someone on the platform, emergency lowering brings them down safely. Test it every day so everyone knows it works and how to use it.
What do pothole guards do?
They drop down when the platform rises, reducing ground clearance so a wheel cannot drop into a hole and tip the lift. A lift whose guards do not deploy must not be raised.
Can scissor lifts be used outdoors?
Only models rated for outdoor use, within the maker's wind limit and on firm, level ground. Teams that record checks in HVI can log site conditions with each check.
Can scissor lift checks be done on a phone?
Yes. Operators complete the daily checklist with photos, and lifts that fail are blocked until repaired. Book a demo to see scissor lift checklists in HVI.
