LNG Trucks in India: Economics, Refuelling & Maintenance

By Alex Rowan on October 19, 2026

lng-trucks-india-guide

LNG trucks are being promoted in India as a cleaner, potentially cheaper option for long-haul freight. Liquefied natural gas packs enough energy for long highway runs, and natural gas engines produce fewer emissions than older diesel engines. But the economics depend heavily on fuel prices, how far the truck runs and whether LNG stations exist on your routes. This guide compares LNG with diesel and CNG, covers refuelling, maintenance and safety, and shows how fleets track LNG and diesel trucks together in HVI.

Fuel choice guide for Indian long-haul fleets

LNG Trucks in India: Economics, Refuelling and Maintenance

Compare fuel economics, refuelling and range, understand cryogenic tank safety and maintenance, and see where LNG makes sense for your fleet today.

Three truck fuels compared
LNG

TankInsulated cryogenic
Best forLong-haul routes
CNG
Stored asCompressed gas
TankHigh-pressure cylinders
Best forShorter routes
Diesel

TankStandard fuel tank
Best forAny route

Fuel Economics: LNG vs Diesel

LNG trucks usually cost more to buy, so the saving has to come from fuel. The figures below are illustrative, as prices change often.

Diesel truck
Fuel efficiency3.5 km per litre
Fuel priceRs 90 per litre
Fuel costRs 25.7 per km
LNG truck
Fuel efficiency3.5 km per kg
Fuel priceRs 75 per kg
Fuel costRs 21.4 per km

In this example, a truck running 1,20,000 km a year saves about Rs 5.1 lakh in fuel. Use real prices and fuel efficiency on your routes, and weigh the saving against the higher purchase price.

Refuelling and Range Planning

The LNG station network is growing but still limited, mostly along major corridors. Plan routes around it.

1

Map stations

Check LNG stations along your regular routes.

2

Check range

Compare tank range with the gaps between stations.

3

Allow a buffer

Plan for loads, gradients and detours.

4

Keep moving

Long idle periods can lead to fuel loss from boil-off.

Track LNG and Diesel Trucks Side by Side

HVI records fuel, services, tank inspections and defects for LNG and diesel trucks in one place, so you can compare real cost per km and keep every truck safe.

Cryogenic Tank Safety

LNG is stored extremely cold, at around minus 160 degrees Celsius. That brings safety rules every driver and mechanic must follow.

Safety warning

LNG and cold tank parts can cause severe cold burns. Wear the right gloves and face protection when refuelling. Never tamper with pressure relief valves, park in well-ventilated areas and keep ignition sources away from the tank and fuel lines.

Tank mountings and insulation undamaged
Pressure gauge reading within limits
No frost or leaks on lines and fittings
Relief valves and vent lines clear

How Maintenance Differs

Natural gas engines share much with diesel engines, but some parts and checks change. Follow the maker's service schedule for your model.

Similar to diesel
  • Engine oil, cooling and air filters
  • Gearbox, axles, brakes and tyres
  • Chassis, suspension and electrics
  • Daily walk-around checks
Specific to LNG
  • Spark plugs and ignition parts on many gas engines
  • Cryogenic tank, vaporiser and fuel lines
  • Gas leak detection and safety valves
  • Engine oil suited to natural gas engines

Where LNG Makes Sense Today

LNG works best when the truck runs far, often and close to stations.

Good fit

High-mileage corridors

Long, regular runs along routes with LNG stations.

Possible fit

Mixed routes

Works if stations are reachable on most trips.

Poor fit

Routes without stations

Or trucks that run few kilometres a year.

LNG Truck FAQs

Are LNG trucks cheaper to run than diesel trucks?

They can be, depending on the price gap between LNG and diesel and how many kilometres the truck runs. LNG trucks usually cost more to buy, so the fuel saving must cover that over time. Work it out with real prices for your routes.

What is the difference between LNG and CNG trucks?

LNG is natural gas cooled into a liquid and stored in insulated cryogenic tanks, which allows longer range. CNG is compressed gas stored in high-pressure cylinders and usually suits shorter routes.

Is the LNG refuelling network enough in India?

It is growing but still limited and mostly along major corridors. Check stations on your regular routes and the gaps between them before choosing LNG trucks.

Are LNG trucks safe?

Yes, when tanks and fuel systems are maintained and drivers follow the rules. The main risks are cold burns and gas release. Teams that record tank checks in HVI keep safety inspections on time.

How do I compare LNG and diesel trucks fairly?

Run them on the same routes and track fuel, maintenance, downtime and cost per km for each over several months. Book a demo to see mixed-fuel fleet tracking in HVI.
